RRSSは、ニュースやブログなど各種のウェブサイトの更新情報を簡単にまとめ、配信するための幾つかの文書フォーマットの総称である。SSの取得・購読にはRSSリーダー（フィードリーダーとも）と呼ばれるソフトウェアを使う。また、RSSを作成・追加するためのソフトウェアもあるが、比較的シンプルなXML形式なので手作業でも可能である。
